In the second of the Orpheus Choir's 2017 subscription series, experience one of the greatest choral works of all time, live in a great cathedral acoustic.

“It has been said that my Requiem does not express the fear of death, and someone has called it a lullaby of death. But it is thus that I see death: a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience.” Fauré, 1902

Also included in the programme is Mozart’s Mass in C Major (Sparrow Mass). Counterpoint is almost completely lacking in this work; in its place, one finds an abundance of tender or sentimental tunefulness with accessible folk-like themes. And what of that nickname? Just listen to the early measures of the Sanctus and the Benedictus, and you will hear the organ imitate the song of that ubiquitous bird. Perhaps there was a stray sparrow outside the Mozart's window, or perhaps they even had one as a pet. All we know is that Wolfgang apparently couldn’t get the bird’s chirping out of his mind. Almost two and a half centuries later, we hear it still.

Brent Stewart: Conductor

James Clayton: Baritone

Lisa Harper-Brown: Soprano
