The Orpheus Choir is delighted to partner with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra to present Handel's
Since its premiere over two centuries ago, hardly a Christmas has gone by without a performance of George Frederic Handel’s magnificent Messiah.
While that first performance used only 24 singers, Handel’s music becomes truly resplendent when gifted grander forces. Conductor Brett Weymark’s massed choir performances of Messiah often contain more than 400 singers and are a highlight of the Sydney music calendar. This Christmas, Maestro Weymark will unite the NZSO and the mighty Orpheus Choir to perform Handel on a dazzling scale.
Such glory requires soloists of the highest order. Australian soprano Celeste Lazarenko is renowned for her ‘electrifying’ performances, while her fellow Australian, the Wagnerian mezzo-soprano Deborah Humble, is a vocal powerhouse. Kiwi tenor Jonathan Abernethy is an emerging international opera superstar and Mobil Song Quest winner Jared Holt is a bass of pedigree and power.
