Meet our Assistant Conductor
Stephen Clothier
Stephen is a pianist, composer, conductor and librarian originally from Hastings, Hawke's Bay. He was appointed as the inaugural Assistant Conductor of Orpheus Choir Wellington in 2024 and made his public debut conducting the choir later that year in a concert including Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man. In addition to choral conducting and accompanying, he has extensive experience as a music director in the field of musical theatre, working on a range of shows (including new commissions) with groups such as the Wellington Footlights Society, Red Scare Theatre Company, Backyard Theatre, and Coasters Musical Theatre Inc.
As a composer, he has had works performed or recorded by a diverse range of groups and performers including the NZSO, NZSQ, APO, Stroma, the AKTO Ensemble (Athens), and violinists Barbara Lüneburg (Austria) and Mark Menzies (NZ). He acts as the alternate accompanist for Orpheus in addition to conducting and singing with them.
He holds degrees in composition, English literature, and information science from the New Zealand School of Music and Victoria University of Wellington. He currently works as the head of Children's and Youth Services at Wellington City Libraries.
